CORRECTED CROSS.

I keep telling myself

That I want to live

And that I do not want to die;

And the world keeps telling me

I am alive;

But when I turn to God

And I try to pray

He tells me that is not true;

That Satan is lying to me;

That I must tell the deceivers,

As Christ did, to get behind me;

That I am not alive in this world

Which I say I need;

That I am not alive in this flesh

I forever feed;

That I am not alive in my sinfulness,

My pride or my greed.

Indeed, I am not alive at all

Except I have faith

And hear and heed the call

And follow Christ

Now!

This moment!

In temptation!

In service!

In love!

In trial!

In suffering!

On the way to the cross!

And all the way to death!

And then in truth in Him

To Resurrection.

That is, if I have done it correctly!

DUE DATE

Nobody wants the old man;

They want what is shiny and new;

They wanted it from me

When I was a kid;

Just like they wanted it from you.

Maybe it was not so black and white

Or clear as day;

Yes, in time the truth will always fade

And turn a duller gray.

Sad isn’t it? How we all get old

Broken but without a clue

That this life we are living

Seems the best that we have

In lieu of the one coming due.

WRONG DOCTOR

They told me to be a doctor;

Make more of this life than it is;

The faith all must have

As we travel our way

Is something you never will miss;

And the death that you find

Is nothing at all

But a loving sweet passionate kiss

With something we all learned

In our own private gardens

And the serpent’s silent,

Surreptitious hiss.

Make the most of this life

And take what you get

But it can never be

Just what you wish.

CONSUMPTIVE KNEADS

I keep buying and grabbing and taking

What I think I need;

Doing all the things that the poor sense

Of my wounded nature pleads;

Finding what our contempt

For the Spirit within

For each other breeds;

Failing the one saving action

That from all the others

In the end frees;

That is, stopping the movement,

The consumption and the talk,

And simply getting down on our knees.

FIRST QUARTER

The year started with a bang;

The ball dropped gloriously;

The fat lady sang for twenty thirteen

And January was like a bouncing baby boy.

February too has been amazing;

Now it is time to take a break;

Lent is starting;

Let go; Let God; Have no fear;

The birds will soon be chirping;

And the vernal equinox will appear;

St. Patrick’s Day will signal

The dying days of winter

And we can all shed a tear

And raise a green beer

For a quarter of a year.
