PRESSURE

There used to be a sense of prayer

In the silence; and in the stillness,

A quiet and a peace.

Now the voices and the duties and

The obligations are there

And the babble and the madness won’t cease;

But I must move forward

Into the cacophony

Though my mind is not up to the task;

Time does not slow down or stop

For anyone;

And one can never rest in reverie

Or look back.

I can only pray that God is in the tumult,

I can remember the peace and

And the way back I can track.

HANDY PRESENT

I cannot go back!

I cannot go forward!

I cannot stay where I am!

I have no life within me;

I have lost my human stand;

All I can do is cling to eternity;

And rest in its spiritual hand.

NOTHING IS BOLD

I must quickly get a few thoughts on the page

Before my self-awareness shuts me out or

My rhyme shuts me in;

The tightrope and the balance

Belong to the Spirit, to the muse.

Otherwise I amuse myself;

And once I begin to like what I see

And to hear what I like

I look on too much and

I lose the necessary freedom, the flow.

How often does that happen?

How does it happen?

Like procreation,

Life will have its way, its say

Always in the end;

I can either die and bow

To its glory and grace or

Flow with the current

Where my soul can embrace its power.

When I am touched by humility

The Eternal can see through me;

When I am blind

Eternity can humbly find

Its reflection in its creation

And lose touch for a few moments

With the sublime.

Time has no hold on creation;

I have no place that I can hold;

Creation will flourish into forever;

I cannot make anything be bold.

SOUL WATCH

The day must have its say sometimes

While I lay quiet before creation;

Nothing lifts the spirit

To bow before its might;

Blindness lights the fires of faith

Until night gives the reassurance

That the battle was not waged in vain.

The same magnificat can be a daily evensong;

The same God rules the dark as the day

And marks the flow as seen from Eternity’s view.

Hark!

The watch begins counting

From the silent stillness of twilight

Winding the heart and the mind

Around a sacred soul;

Sitting in wait

For the return of the light.

HEARING CLEARLY

No matter what we do life gets the best of us;

Yet some fret and strut more than the rest;

And the life that is calling to the answers that we give

Is the life that in the end becomes the test.

Can I hear the quiet, holy, whispered query?

Or am I driven by the mad parade

Of mortal smiles and tears?

No worry!

It will all be the same for everyone

When the life that really matters

Clearly nears.
